Late last year, federal and state agencies unleashed a new plan designed to share information about illnesses and product defects associate with pet foods. It’s called PETNet for short and stands for the Pet Event Tracking Network. A joint venture of the PFP (Partnership for Food Protection) and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), PETNet is described as “a secure, web-based information exchange system that allows the FDA, and federal and state agencies to share information about pet-food related incidents.”...
We all love the holidays, spending time with family and friends and entertaining more than we do the rest of the year. However, there are many dangers for our pets associated with this time of year. Cats and dogs both become curious about all this new activity. The smells, tastes, and all those shiny ornaments are tempting and can make our pets sick.
Roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms, and heartworms are potentially serious problems for your dog, and your puppy can be born with them already in his system if the mother was infected. Dogs also get worms from contaminated water or being around or even eating excrement from an infected animal. Even sniffing or licking the feces or the anus of other dogs who are infected can give your dog worms. Also, a dog with worms will continue to get them by sniffing and cleaning his own anus or from touching or even eating his own poop. He ingests the eggs and more worms develop in his belly. For this reason, a one-time treatment is just not enough. Your dog needs to be treated regularly for worms...
When it comes to eating, dogs are more attracted to smells than they are tastes, but taste is a factor. Many dog food manufacturers use synthetic flavor or aroma enhancers with absolutely no nutritional value to tantalize the taste buds. This is sometimes why dogs will eat poop, because the synthetic flavor enhancers are not destroyed by the digestive process and are still present in the dog’s stool which makes the next dog coming along think it’s a source of nutrition. It’s reassuring to note that Brothers Complete uses a coating of dried chicken liver for added flavor and protein. Additionally, since Brothers is mostly animal protein and not filled with grain or potato, it is closer to the diet that a dog’s instincts naturally prefer...
Most homeowners at some time or another find insects in their flour, cereals, breakfast foods or dry baking ingredients in cupboards or other storage places. But, did you know that, according to a 2005 study by North Dakota State University in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, commercially prepared dry pet food is one of the primary sources of insect infestation in many households...
Like humans, dogs also need exercise. Exercise is one of the better ways to keep our health properly maintained. We usually do exercise to reduce weight, fit into clothes, promote healthy wellbeing and improve our way of life. The reasons why you need exercise are also the reasons why your dogs need exercise...
If you didn’t brush your teeth regularly and get regular checkups, you can just imagine what would happen to your teeth. Your pet’s teeth are made of the same stuff and they require regular dental care as well. Approximately 85% of adult pets have some form of periodontal disease. In fact, periodontal disease is the most common infectious disease in both dogs and cats. This can result in pain, bad breath and even tooth loss for your pet. And that’s only the beginning. Chronic infection in an animal’s mouth can spread harmful bacteria to its bloodstream resulting in infection of the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. Did you know that one milligram of plaque contains over 1 trillion bacteria? Fortunately, these disease-causing bacteria can be neutralized by routine plaque removal and/or professional care...
Your dog was once healthy. You can still remember the day you got it from the pet shop; it was a lively, bouncing, cute, little puppy. Its fur was full and shiny, and you loved to run your fingers through it. A few years later, your dog is now weak and its fur is no longer full and shiny. Your dog has ear infections and is itching all over its body. Some of these problems are related to the dog food you feed your dog...
Labradors hunt. Border Collies herd livestock. Rat Terriers made the streets of London a little bit safer at the turn of the century. Dogs were created to work and they want and need to be active. Their non-domesticated counterparts are very involved on a daily basis. Providing for their families, basic survival, even their social lives are more complex than you might imagine, and your family pet is no different. But the job of family pet doesn’t entail a whole lot of activity – unless you, the caring pet owner, see to it. Personal interaction is absolutely necessary for your dog to get a decent amount of exercise. In the wild, dogs have other dogs to run with – your pet has you...
Brothers Complete is a family-owned and operated Pet Industry business – not a wholly-owned subsidiary of some conglomerate with fingers in any number of different pies...
We’ve had several questions regarding the salt content, compared to other ingredients, in our kibble. While salt alone could be detrimental, we are very careful to balance this essential element with other ingredients and minerals. It may appear from its higher position on the ingredients list, that there is a lot more salt than in other similar products. However, there is an industry standard whereby you can legally place certain ingredients further down in the list by splitting them (rice and rice bran for instance). If these were listed as one ingredient, they would be closer to the top of the list...
